Based on the ‘who wants to be a millionaire’ game but we modified it to be Money based game, and of course it focuses on the money concept for lower primary children.

We creatively added more interesting colours and understandable instructions so that the children could understand the game and enjoyed themselves which lead to learning.

We suited the game’s questions with their level and relate them to the real world situation so that the could learn and apply their knowledge.

Accomplish this task was not too easy for us. Lots of time were spent, energy, and sacrifices were needed. But, my team was superb. We have high understanding and commitment and we did this task in positive mode.

Here are some strength and weaknessess…

The STRENGTHS:

i) The visuals are colourful. Attract pupils’ attention. The influx of cartoon characters like Mickey Mouse would do good.

ii) The context of the award which was changed from money to candies could motivate pupils to participate.

iii) The questions were created accordingly as we began with easy questions and ended up with challenging questions.

 The WEAKNESSES

i) There should be more questions as four sample questions were not adequate.

ii) There should also be few rounds where teachers should make the most of pupils to join the activity.

iii) Rewards were attractive but should be more practical like grades/stars or presents.

We meet again and I would like to talk (actually write) about how we as teachers can try something new in our teaching.

Learning nowadays aren’t all about chalk and talk nor spoon fed. The horizons are widen and there are more to integrate each day in making teaching and learning more appealing, functional and most important, able to reveal the talents each student has. So, what is the connection between the quotation up above the statement here?

Introduction of ICT in teaching and learning has been the ‘breaking point’ in 21st century education. Students are exposed to a new environment in which their skills and knowledge are put into its optimum use.

Back then, there were parents, even now, there are parents who tend to restrict their child from playing video games in which they think have negative effects towards the child’s development. Well, think again. Still thinking hard?

If one can learn Japanese just through playing video games which requires him to understand the words in Japanese, why not we make this applicable in learning English?

Find a suitable game, innovate, plan, and integrate. Four simple steps- remarkable outcomes.

Overview of the game

Digimon world 3

Digimon World series was first introduced in 2002 and Digimon World 3 is the third instalment of this famous series. This game is fashioned by Bandai for the Playstation and and pc.

As you logged in, your character will be set to a child named Junior who enters an online virtual reality called “digimon online”. Once you’ve arrived, you and your friends will be trapped inside the game by a terrorist.

Later, after the terrorist announcement, you will be asked again to make a decision in picking up your digimons as your partners to brace yourself into the wild world of digital world. Here, the stage by stage target and accomplishment of the game will be told.

Activities during this lesson:

Completing this game requires students to be quite proficient in English language as they shall need the language  knowledge in order to understand the storyline. The language used is quite simple as this game is meant for children between the age of 10 to 16.

For this particular purpose, this lesson is designed for year 5 intermediate to advance learners. These are the suggested activities that can be integrated with the playing of the game digimon world 3:

  1. Play the game. Students will be given at most 2 days to complete the first stage. (This game will be played stage by stage)
  2. Share experience (orally). After completing the first stage, teacher will conduct one session where students are required to share their experience while encountering the first stage. They are expected to include such elements:

–          Types of Digimons they have chosen. (varies according to packs chosen)

–          Why they chose the Digimons – state the characteristics as well as advantage and disadvantage. (The characteristics of each Digimon are stated in the game)

–          What did they encounter in stage 1. (e.g. who has they defeated)

  1. Write a summary. Students are required to write a summary of around 60 words for each stage. In addition to the storyline, they are also expected to include types of Digimon they have chosen for each stage, the advantage and disadvantage as well as comparisons between each Digimon.

HAVE FUN!!!!

SKETCHFU!

Posted: February 7, 2011 in Uncategorized

For this entry, I would like to share one of the amazing online teaching and learning tools which is ‘Sketchfu’. This tool allows children to express their creativity and expression. Children can colour, draw and also share their art with their friends. It has many choices of colours and children can choose the size of brushes they need from a very tiny dot until a very thick brush. This allows the children to make some details touch on their art. Besides that, this tools will be published as an animation of steps someone drawing. From a little dot until the drawing was complete. So other children can learn how to draw something by looking at the steps.

However, this tool did not have any eraser for children to make any correction. Children have to use their creativity to erase their mistake by choosing the suitable colour to correct their mistake. To use this tool, children have to go to this tool website and use it online.

From my point of view, this tool is user friendly and it has very similar features with paints. One of the advantage of this tool is children can share their artwork with their friends and they also can view and give comments to other people’s artwork. This tool is suitable for children in year 1, 2 and 3. Teacher can shows a picture of something or draw and show the children the steps of drawing that thing. Children will draw the same thing while following the steps shown by teacher. Teacher also can teach spelling by using this tool. Teacher just has to write the letter and publish it. Then it wills automatically being animated from one word to one word. After that, they can see each other artworks and leave some comments. It is quite interesting, fun and enjoyable and they can do drawing while learning English language.

Try yourself this tool and I’m sure you’ll enjoy it!

TPACK and My lesson

Posted: February 7, 2011 in Uncategorized

Hi there! For this post I will discuss about TPACK and relate it with one of my lesson during practicum. First of all, I would like to define TPACK from my point of view.

T              =Technological

PA          = Pedagogical

CK           = Content Knowledge

So, I define it as the usage of technology as a method to deliver the knowledge. I have my own experienced applied it during practicum even though on that time I was unintentionally applied this theory in my lesson. I taught year 3 English classroom with average proficiency level. The topic was Transportation and the subtopic was name of transportations. So, it was clear that my content was names of transportations.

First of all, I drilled their previous knowledge by asking them mode of transportation they used to come to school. Then, I give some feedback and showed them the spelling of those transportations. After that, I start used technological stuff in that lesson. I started with a power point slideshow which showed them few transportations and also the spelling. I used drilling technique by asking them to spell each transportation twice. After that, I used a video entitled ‘Mr. Bean Animated Series- Transportations’ to give them better understanding to each transportation. This video showed those transportations they learned just now and the student can recall each name of the transportations in that video well. After that, I shows some pictures of transportations by using power points slide shows (screen shots) and the children can tell me the name of the transportations and some of them can spell it correctly. The children also can answers few comprehension questions related with that video easily.

This shows how TPACK being implemented in my classroom and I am able to achieve the objective of that lesson by integrating those three things together which is Technological, Pedagogical and also Content Knowledge. However, teacher must make sure those three things combined efficient and effectively in order to achieve the learning objective.

My Top 10 Wish Lists

Posted: January 18, 2011 in Uncategorized

This is my third entry for this new rebranding blog (supposedly this is my 2nd entry but I’m too hyper active) and I will list down my top 10 wish lists on  how I wish I could change the ICT scenario in the schools.

10

All children should be given equal chance to learn and use ICT

Based on my experience, not all children can have access to the computer lab. Even though my schools have a lot of ICT tools it just can be access by good class only. So, how about the last class? This is a story of urban school. How about the school in the rural area? Do they have all this tools? So, every children should have access to ICT tools and learn about it.

9

Provide each class with ICT tools.

Each class should have enough ICT tools to help them during the lesson. Teacher also should make full use of it.

8

Provide enough training for teachers.

Enough training for teacher is a must in order to implement technology in the classroom. Teacher is the person who is delivering the lesson and they should be the first to know everything about it before they can implement it in the classroom. So, teacher should have enough knowledge before they can integrate ICT with their lesson. That is why training courses on ICT should be provided to all teachers.

7

Provide basic knowledge about ICT for children.

When teacher have the knowledge on how to use ICT in the classroom, they can conduct a class and also give some basic knowledge to the children. This can help children to do their tasks and works related with ICT.

6

Encourage the usage of Web 2.0

Web 2.0 is the best medium which teacher can integrate with the lesson.  It is fun and enjoyable and I am sure that both student and teacher will love it.

5

Plan, create and Implement a better system

A better system should support all the idea since the current system did not really support the full usage of ICT in the classroom.

4

E-textbook

Replace our current paper textbook with e-textbook which is more interesting and attractive.

3

E- school book

After replacing the textbook, each childrens should have e-schoolbook which they can use from year 1 until Form 5. What they have to do every year is to download the e-textbook to their e-schoolbook. Besides it is interesting and attractive for children, this e-school book also help teacher a lot since they do not have to mark student’s book anymore.

2

E- classroom

In order to support the new brand system, each class should be completed with ICT stuff which is parallel with what students have. So everything will be ICT at school in the future.

1

Supportive ICT environment

The community should give full support of the ICT usage in the classroom and try their best to encourage people who are in the system to implement and also learn it. Especially those who are in the system and also near the system.

ICT

Posted: January 10, 2011 in Uncategorized

Integrating ICT in teaching and learning process is one of my favourite. Besides it is cheaper in term of preparation cost, It also exciting and enjoyable. This is the best situation and also condition for children to learn something. I can count myself as lucky because I got 2 classes, 4 periods for each class per week and 2 periods for each class from it are specially for their ICTL (ICT in learning if I not mistaken).

On my first day teaching one of the classes, I entered the class and saw their happy face. I thought this were common children behavior because they were happy to see a new teacher coming into their classroom. I saw some children were busy packing their stuff and I asked one of them where they want to go. There was a boy who told me that supposedly today they were going to the computer lab. I told them that I did not know anything about it and suddenly their facial expression changed. However I am able to recover their mood by promising them, the next ICTL class will be at the computer lab. Their mentality are easy, during the ICTL period they are going to the computer lab and doing or playing something with the computer. From that day I learned that the children love ICT and as a teacher we must make full use of it and do not kill their passion in using it.

I love using song in my lesson and I use a lot of it during my teaching practice. I also realize that I will not catch any attention from the children when I start singing so I am thankful to those who are created those ‘music formats’ and ‘music softwares’. Every time I use song children are very excited and I found this method is better for children in order to remember something. I use song to teach children about fruits and they are easily can remember those fruits. I tested those children by showing them some pictures of that fruits and they can name it correctly. The children also can create their own songs by manipulating the lyrics based on their favourite fruits.

Besides song, I also used video in my lesson. I bring my class to the computer lab (during ICTL period) and give them some reward of their well behavior during the period in the classroom by watching the cartoon. I choose cartoon which have relation with their lesson. One of it was Mr. Beans’ animated series entitled transportations. In this cartoon there were a lot of transportations being used. So I just used the video and children will know what those transportations look alike. I also give them some task related with comprehension and also the spelling of the transportation. The children can answer those questions well and this shows that visual learning is a necessary now days.

However, I also faced an obstacle in order to integrate and implement those ICT stuff in my lesson. There was a teacher who cannot accept this method especially the cartoon video. She told me that I should follow every single thing as stated in the textbook. I tried to give some argument and explain to her that I follow the textbook but in my own way by integrating my lesson with ICT. Yet, she still cannot accept it and me firm with my decision to use ICT during my lesson. I take this as a small argumentation about different ideology and perspective.

These are my experienced and I will keep all these memory, improvise myself and make sure I will be better in the future.

Last entry- E-portfolio

Posted: November 11, 2009 in sesawang

For this 14 weeks, I learned a lot about e-portfolio. This subject give me oppurtunity to discover something which is more powerful and academic if compare with other social networking site such as facebook and myspace by introducing this site, windowslive. I can have connection with all my friends especially in this course and also we can change information with each other by using e-mail. Other then that we also have to write on our own spaces or blog. This is the opprtunity for me to express my opinion on the topic which being assigned to us every week.

E-portfolio help me to compile all my work online and it is exciting when everyone can have access with it. It also such as interesting task and I enjoy it. This e-portfolio is not just for our study usage only. I can use it in the future too. Maybe my collection of works can be use as my teaching aid at school. I still can download and use it and I am agree that my ICT skills have improved throughout this course

After few months learning those kind of technology and ‘e-stuff’, now, I can define e-portfolio clearly.  E-portfolio is collection of electronic evidence assembled and managed by a user such as electronic files, images, multimedia, blog entries, and hyperlinks.

Last but not least, thank you to our lecturer, Prof Raja Maznah, all tutors and also all my friends.

Community of practice can be implemented in the classroom by promoting group work among students. Teacher can assign any task and ask them to do in the group. Then they will learn to solve and do the task as a team. This is good because student can learn to be cooperative and at the same time they will do the best for the sake of everyone in their group. Those student who are shy can overcome their attitude problem by support from team members and this is good for their self-development.

Besides that, teacher can promote peer support which ask good student to guide and help weak student. Student will learn to be supportvie and cooperative and prevent them from bad habit such as self-fish. Weak student can learn from their friends and this will be easier because they learn from their peer which is in the same age. So there is no barrier and student will feel comfortabe in learning. So, everyone will walk together to the success.

Community of Practice (COP)

Posted: November 11, 2009 in Uncategorized

Community of practice refers to a group of people who share an interest, a craft, and/or a profession.  It is a process of sharing information and experiences and also learning from others. In the classroom community of practice promote students to work in a group and train them to be cooperative. Besides that it also encourage students to learn from each other. It can be either  online such as within electronic bulletin boards, newsgroups, on designated websites, or discussion forums or in a real life such as in a field setting or elsewhere in the environment.

Community of practice can motivate learners in learning. By helping each other in the classroom, students will feel the sense of community which support and give encouragement to them in their learning. Besides that, student who are shy can overcome his/her problem by this practice. No more lonely person and they will learn as a community in the classroom. This is good especially in driving them to the success.
